Develop skills to last a lifetime

As a child, I was tiny and painfully shy. Meeting an adult's eyes felt dangerous. Speaking to one felt impossible. Secondary school was national service for anarchists — kids in my form looked about forty, and they were loud, confident, terrifying.

Then my history teacher introduced me to the after-school drama club. Within a few months,  she gave me the confidence to stand up on stage in front of the whole school as the MC in Cabaret. I even got tripped up by the school bully while running up the aisle to the stage, which also taught me that things rarely run smoothly. It's how you react to setbacks which really count.

Miss Caxton gave me a passion that's lasted over forty years, and tools that have helped me in almost every situation life's thrown at me. Now, with two children of my own, I see how badly acting and communication skills are overlooked in the national curriculum.

So that's my mission: to give as many children as possible the skills that changed everything for me.

What are LAMDA exams?

Often described as the performance equivalent of music exams, they are nationally recognized speech and drama assessments overseen by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. The assessments require students to perform between 1-3 monologues from published plays in front of a small panel of examiners either in person or online. They will also be asked a series of questions relating either to themselves or their chosen pieces. They are designed to help students delve into characterisation and develop strong speaking skills.

Prep for LAMDA Communication Exams: Speaking in Public

Grades 1-8 and Entry Level

Perfect for very young learners or those who have never taken an exam before. Studying the words of engaging poems, learners enhance their expressive skills, memory, and recall abilities.

Also their self-confidence is boosted by discussing things they love, like their favourite toy, place or hobby.

Acting Exam students immerse themselves in characters and dissect the context of dramatic texts. They deliver performances of selected scenes and develop insights into the background and characters. Learners hone skills in articulation, projection, expression and character development. At higher grades they also learn about the impact of influential theatre practitioners and cultivate a sensitive understanding of subtext.

Participants craft their own speeches by conducting research on topics, designing visual aids and delivering them from memory. They will learn to articulate thoughts clearly and develop vocal and body language skills to engage listeners and deliver memorable content.

Testimonial

'Ella has been working with Rainer for the past three months. It's been lovely to watch her grow in confidence and develop her speaking and performance skills in such a short time. She absolutely loves her lessons and looks forward to them every week. I would highly recommend Rainer to any parent enrolling their child in LAMDA.''
